The Program*

DAY 1

Arrive in León  - transfer to the charming town of Astorga or Val de San Lorenzo.

Welcome tapas and Spanish wine.

In the afternoon explore Astorga. Visit Roman ruins, Cathedral de Santa Maria de Astorga, and Antoni Gaudi’s Episcopal Palace. Astorga is a stop on the Camino de Santiago (UNESCO World Heritage List).

 An evening of tasting with Chef Esmeraldo. We will explore the cuisine of the Maragatos at a locally owned restaurant and enjoy specially selected Spanish regional wines.

DAY 2

Start your day like a typical Spaniard with freshly squeezed orange juice and café con leche, followed by a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. Check out of our hotel.

Following the footsteps of the pilgrims heading for Santiago de Compostela, we will visit the villages of Castrillo de los Polvazares, Rabanal del Camino, Foncebadón, and the Cruz de Ferro.

Our destination for lunch is the Prada a Tope Winery and Posada Palacio D Canedo. We will enjoy a feast especially chosen by Chef Esmeraldo.  A gift shop with products and wines unique to the El Bierzo area is located close by.

Transfer to Pozos. Check into the Lodge. Modern amenities are available with the exception of an internet connection. This is truly a unique experience to explore the real Spain and connect with the local people.

Our evening will conclude with a gourmet dinner especially created by Chef Esmeraldo who has chosen dishes based on traditional local cuisine and paired them with Spanish wines.

DAY 3

Freshly squeezed orange juice and a leisurely breakfast at the Lodge.

Tour the village of Val de San Lorenzo, whose history in textile and wool production dates back to the 17th century. We will visit a traditional textile mill, and enjoy demonstrations of the weaving process.

Lunch will be a tasting session with Chef Esmeraldo at a locally owned and family run restaurant.

Dinner in Pozos, created by Chef Esmeraldo with natural and when possible organic ingredients grown in the area. Specially selected Spanish wines, cava, cider and liqueurs with dinner.

Evening stroll.

DAY 4

A leisurely breakfast of fresh local products.

Hands on cooking session in Pozos with Chef Esmeraldo, this morning’s cooking session will incorporate traditional local cooking methods and techniques using an outdoor oven or wood stove. A four course lunch will be created, along the way we will nibble, taste, indulge, and savour the joys of cooking and creating. We will enjoy wines from El Bierzo and Tierra de León. A recipe booklet will be provided.

Visit the local church and museum. Explore the terraced fields, oak forests, vegetable gardens, cows and chickens as we enjoy our nature walk.

Dinner in Pozos, created by Chef Esmeraldo featuring foods from the province of Galicia. A dinner of Parrillada Gallega (earth and sea mixed grill) and Albarino wines.

DAY 5 – for the 5nights/6days tour

Aleisurely breakfast of fresh local products. Check out of our Lodge.

Transfer to León.

Stop in the Village of Jiménez de Jamuz for a demonstration from traditional potters (not available Mondays). This is the pottery we used for our cooking classes in Pozos.

Visit a local bar in Castrocontrigo to taste and buy locally produced Santocildes chocolate.

Lunch stop at a locally owned restaurant.

Drive to León and get settled into our hotel – Hostal San Marcos one of the most famous Paradores in Spain (or equivalent if your date is not available).

Explore León, including the León Cathedral with its stained glass windows, Basilica de San Isidora and Antoni Gaudi’s, Casa Botines.

Stroll the streets of León with time to browse in the shops.

Dining as the Spanish do, a late night dinner at a specially chosen locally owned restaurant, where Chef Esmeraldo will choose the menu of traditional Leonese dishes and Spanish wines.

DAY 6 – for the 5nights/6days tour

Day 5

This morning (9am)  join Chef Esmeraldo in creating a picnic lunch of wine, breads, local cheeses, Jamón serrano, cecina, lomo, chorizo, Spanish tortilla and a few special surprises.

 Nature hike along the Rio Eria or up the mountain for valley views. Enjoy our lunch along the way.

Dinner created by Esmeraldo with natural local ingredients grown in the area, will be a Spanish degustación menu of 8 courses paired with spanish wines, cava, and locally made apple cider.

Evening village stroll.

DAY 6

A leisurely breakfast of fresh local products.

Excursion to the small villages of Truchas, Villar del Monte, and Corparales to explore the local history and farming methods.  View Sacred Heart – Cristo de Valdavido perched high on a hill and built over the ruins of Count Ramiro Peno’s Castle and an old Roman fort. Option #2 – Hike to Lago de Truchillas instead of village/driving tours.

Lunch along the way.

Hands-on cooking session, for those who wish to participate, with Chef Esmeraldo. We will be creating Paella Iberica for our dinner. We will also create tapas to savour as we wait for our paella to cook. Jamón Iberico carving lesson. Specially selected Spanish wines, cava, cider and liqueurs with dinner.
